The New EERE Branding Identity

clock October 13, 2009 18:23
EERE has been working on a long-term Web site redesign effort, which will eventually include every element of the site. You may recall that we previously updated the branding used on EERE Web sites by changing the banners used on the EERE Web site.

Now, in order for EERE to have a cohesive identity, we have just updated our print standards and exhibit guidelines as well. [More]

The New Programs and Offices Link

A new link, called "Programs and Offices," is being added to the standard EERE template. This link is located in the upper right hand corner of the EERE template, beneath the search box and "EERE Information Center," and links to a short page that allows visitors to navigate to other EERE programs or offices. Template Interviews and Benchmarking Summary Reports

clock September 3, 2009 12:41
Last month marked a few key milestones related to redesigning eere.energy.gov. The new banner images were populated throughout the site, and the EERE home page experienced a "facelift." We also completed our template interviews and benchmarking analysis. (See the July 29th update for a refresher on the redesign.)

Part of our initial work involved meeting and talking with nearly 40 stakeholders about their ideas and suggestions for improving the Web site template. The results of those discussions are described in the interview summary report (PDF 441 KB). Download Adobe Reader.

Our process also included benchmarking about 20 federal, commercial, and non-profit Web sites. The results of that study are available in the benchmarking summary report (PDF 372 KB).

On Aug. 25, our redesign advisory team met to discuss the template interview findings. The group identified these priorities for the new template:

  • Examining improvements to top-level and global navigation

  • Improving users' access to Energy Savers consumer content

  • Providing a mobile-ready template

  • Exploring ways to increase the visibility of EERE's social media presence

  • Making it clear to users which collection of EERE Web files they're searching

During the next couple of months, we'll be drafting a new template wireframe. We're also drafting the new topic landing pages, which we'll review with the advisory team later this month.

As always, your suggestions and feedback are welcome. Please comment below or contact Chris Stewart. [More]

EERE Home Page Facelift

clock August 26, 2009 17:25
The EERE home page has undergone a facelift! In addition to the new banner that rolled out to all sites several weeks ago, the home page now includes a redesigned rotating news box, links to social media resources, links to the EERE mobile site, and streamlined feature graphics.

This is just the first phase in the overall EERE redesign; we expect to roll out further improvements as we move through the redesign process. See the July 29th redesign update for a refresher on the redesign.

Please leave a comment if you have any feedback on this home page facelift. [More]

EERE Web Site Redesign Project Update

clock July 29, 2009 17:41
As most of you already know, we're in the early stages of redesigning the EERE Web site. One of our project goals is to clearly communicate our process with you, the EERE Web community. Following up on our Web coordinator's meeting last week, we wanted to share with you this project update.

Our project goals are:

  1. Update look and feel of EERE Web site to align with new branding and create a more engaging interface for users

  2. Make it easy for users to find all of EERE's 125+ Web site areas

  3. Make it clear to users which collection of EERE Web pages they're searching on (entire site or subset of pages)

  4. Make it easy for users to get to all of EERE Web sites regardless of what page they are on via global navigation

  5. Create a new site template that addresses the priorities of EERE's stakeholders

  6. Clearly communicate redesign process with EERE Web community

Under Sarah Kirchen and Drew Bittner's leadership, we've formed a small advisory team, whose job is to present ideas and recommendations to the TAO director. The team held its first meeting on July 17 and will continue to meet monthly. Special thanks to Andrea Chew, Teresa Carroll, Liz Hartman, John Lippert, Wendy Littman, Anthoney Perkins, and Emily Setzer for serving on this group.

During this and next week, the DOE/EERE banner at the top of every EERE Web site will be replaced with a new banner, which reflects new branding. See New DOE Banners for the EERE Web site for more information.

Our approach for implementing a new look and feel across the EERE Web enterprise will embrace an iterative philosophy. An EERE home page "face lift" is currently under review by TAO management. The updated design offers subtle changes that will continue to unfold in phases throughout the redesign process.

We have interviewed 30+ Web coordinators, contractors, and other key stakeholders regarding their experiences, thoughts, and suggestions for improving the template. Thanks to those of you who have participated. Additionally, we are benchmarking about 20 federal, nonprofit, and commercial Web sites to look for ideas and best practices.

Additionally, we are exploring topic landing pages as a possible solution to making it easier for users to find EERE's 125+ Web sites.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and ideas. [More]
