Compliance with Section 508 standards is one of EERE's highest priorities, and coding accessible tables can be one of the trickier parts of this process. The Data Tables page on Communication Standards, which explains how to code accessible data tables, has been updated with information on how to use the <caption> tag to add a title to your accessible data tables.
The <caption> tag, unlike a header placed in a column-spanning cell, allows you to create a title for a data table. Using this tag to label your tables will allow visitors using screen readers to clearly understand what the title of the table is and where the table's content begins.
For more information about coding accessible Web pages, see the Web Technical Guidelines section of the EERE Communication Standards.
