Question of the Week: How Do You Reduce Your Water Heating Costs

Water heating can account for a significant portion of your energy costs. Purchasing a new ENERGY STAR® water heater is just one way to save on your water heating bills. The Energy Savers Tips site lists other strategies you can use to cut your water heating costs.

For washing dishes, I always leave the plug in the sink after washing dishes, rinsing vegetables, hand-washing etc. I can then do a thorough pre-rinse of dishes going into the dishwasher or pots and pans I will later wash by hand. Because no additional water or heat was used for this prerinse, I save both water and energy. When it comes time to run the dishwasher, I can use the light wash cycle, saving electricity, water, and the heat used to heat the water in the tank. And for washing dishes by hand, I can get by with very little hot water because the dishes are already 80-90% clean.

I put insulation wrap around my water heaters. It does help with the energy cost. I just haven't got around to buying a new water heater when the one I have is only a few years old.

I save a LOT on my electric bill by flipping the breaker off on my water heater. I only turn it back on once a day; when I get home from work, and leave it on for about an hour and then I turn it off and I have plenty of hot water for my morning shower and still have hot water when I return home. Of course I live alone so it is easy to do this. People with families could install a timer and set times suitable for their needs. I plan on getting a timer in the near future. I saved about $50 or more the first month I started doing this.

Washing laundry in cold water. I haven't been indoctrinated that hot water is absolutely necessary. But try to convince my Mother or Sisters. No way.

Also equip the hot water heater (electric) with a timer. Cut standby loss.

There are times that we really need to unplug things that are not being use. Because power still flowing though the appliance is off. Its one way to conserve energy.
